Do you have the thought that you are a sinner?
So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him.” (Gen. 50:17)
In Genesis chapter 50, there is the story of Joseph weeping in front of his brothers who came to ask him for forgiveness. Joseph was sold as a slave by his brothers when he was 17, however he became the governor of Egypt by the grace of God. When his brothers came to Egypt because of the famine in Canaan they met Joseph and he forgave their sins and accepted them. But their sins still remained in their hearts since their thoughts were different from Joseph’s, and as a result they again asked Joseph for forgiveness for their sins. Joseph wept as he saw his brothers being captured by fear and anguish from their sins.
We can see that Joseph had already forgiven them but his brothers couldn’t forsake their thoughts.
“And the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him.” (Isaiah 55:7)
People think that their sins cause them to suffer and experience hardships in their lives and therefore try to stop sinning by themselves, because they know that as sinners they cannot stand . However, God did not ask them to forsake their sins and return to Him, He asked them to forsake their thoughts and return to Him. We consider committing sin as the problem but God considers our thoughts as the problem. Actually the truth is that God has perfectly solved the problem of sin.
“The Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.” (Isaiah 53:6)
God is clearly telling us that He laid on Jesus all our sins. Then that means that Jesus has already taken away all of our sins and we are no longer sinners but righteous. But strangely in Isaiah chapter 55, God still talks about the unrighteous which refers to sinners. So what do you think is the problem here? The answer is that all of our sins have been taken away by Jesus but the thought that they are sinners still remains in their hearts. In other words, people who have the thought that they are sinners are the unrighteous that God talks about. The thought that they are sinners is more serious than them committing sins. This is because they are denying the fact that Jesus was crucified to wash away our sins.
